Supported phones

  • Android 10 or later is required.
  • RAW (DNG) capture works on phones whose camera exposes RAW to apps, including many recent Pixel and Galaxy models. RAW capture depends on your phone’s camera hardware.
  • Lite mode is used on phones without RAW. Safelight develops the look from the cleanest frame the camera can give. You still get the looks, grain, halation and the non-destructive editor.

Safelight tells you which one your phone has before you take a picture. Open Settings > Device to see what your camera can do, and tap Check again after a system update. Safelight is not available for iPhone or the web.

Where are my photos?

Photos are saved to your phone’s photo library, so they appear in your gallery app and Google Photos if you use it. The shutter saves the photo before anything else happens. Imported originals and edit recipes are kept in Safelight’s own storage, and your original is never modified.

Edit photos from my gallery

  1. Open the Roll and tap Import.
  2. Choose Photos for JPEG or HEIC images, or RAW files (DNG) for DNGs from other cameras.
  3. Pick the photo. Safelight develops it with the same looks and tools as your own shots.

Location and privacy

Location tagging is off unless you turn it on. You can remove location from the EXIF data of an exported or shared photo, and your original is never changed. Safelight has no internet permission and collects no data. Read the privacy policy.

Frequently asked questions

Is Safelight free?

Yes. Safelight is free to download and use, with no ads, no account and no subscription. Everything in the app is unlocked and there are no in-app purchases in this version.

Does my phone shoot RAW?

Safelight shoots RAW (DNG) on phones whose camera offers it, including many recent Pixel and Galaxy models. On phones without RAW it runs in Lite mode, developing the look from the cleanest frame the camera can give. The app tells you which one your phone has before you take a picture, and a Device screen explains what your camera can do. Safelight needs Android 10 or later.

Is this a real film look or just a filter?

It is a color pipeline, not a filter laid over your phone's JPEG. Safelight develops the photo itself: color, grain added in density and scaled to the frame, and halation that blooms around bright lights. The six looks (Neutral, Daylight, Silver, Lamplight, Slide and Bypass) were designed from scratch for the app, and none imitates a named film stock.

Why do gray days stay gray?

Film-look apps tend to turn overcast light yellow. Safelight's white balance and Adapt to light read the scene, keep gray days gray and shade neutral, and let lamplight stay warm. You can fix any cast later with temperature and tint sliders, presets or a gray-card sample.

Do I need an account or an internet connection?

No to both. There is no sign-up and no login, and Safelight has no internet permission, so it cannot send anything off your phone. Your photos, edits and recipes stay on the device unless you share them yourself.

Where are my photos saved, and what if I switch apps right after the shutter?

On your phone, in your photo library, so they appear in Gallery and Google Photos. The shutter writes your photo before anything else happens, so switching cameras or going home a moment after the shot does not lose it. If the phone gets too hot, the preview backs off and your photos stay safe.

Does editing change my original?

No. Your original stays untouched. Every edit is a small recipe saved beside it, so you can change the look, crop, white balance, grain or halation at any time, hold to compare with the original, and save your own recipes. You can also import photos from your gallery, including DNGs from other cameras, and develop them the same way.

Does Safelight use my location or other permissions?

Camera access is used only to take photos. Location tagging is optional: it is only used if you turn it on, and you can remove location from the EXIF data of a photo you export or share. Safelight has no internet permission and collects no data. Details are in the privacy policy.

Report a bug

Email [email protected] with the subject “Safelight bug report”. It helps to include:

  • What happened, and what you expected instead.
  • Steps to reproduce: which screen you were on and what you tapped.
  • Phone model and Android version (Settings > About phone), and whether Safelight shows RAW or Lite for your camera.
  • A screenshot or screen recording, if you can.

Safelight has no crash reporting of its own, so your email is the best way for us to find out about a problem. Please do not send passwords or personal details; we never need them.
